Increasingly, the Supreme Court of the United States also known as SCOTUS has been under siege by the Left for what they perceive as judicial activism of the right. What is their quarrel? The Left is angry about the Dobbs decision that pulled down Roe v Wade after 50 years of tedious work by the Right. But the Right is also angry about laws regarding gay marriage.
Everyone is angry about something but while the Right works actively in tiny steps in calculated ways to fight the things they are angry about, the Left wants to do it on a fast track by proposing sweeping judicial reforms like term limits, code of ethics, expanding the number of Justices, etc.
Justice Neil Gorsuch, a conservative Justice who is currently making the rounds to promote a book he has just co-written with one of his former clerks in an interview on Fox News simply says—“Be careful.”
His book is titled: Overruled. The human toll of too much law.
I like the title. It’s a book I’ll love to grab from Amazon. I say this to speak to the reality that many people may not know this, but the American society is overwhelmed with too many laws and too much regulation. There is no greater testament to this than the fact that American jails overflow with over 2 million prisoners, many, for tiny offenses such as crossing the road at the wrong spot or disciplining a disruptive student in a class you teach.
The horrible consequences are seen in a Judge who sits at the bench, sees a 19-year old boy standing before him and he must pass a mandatory sentence of 20 years on such a young man for possessing two ounces of cannabis.
Every time I am in the United States, I am afraid of what I might do wrong. Justice Neil Gorsuch must be applauded for shining a light on this subject.
