Let us Celebrate One of Our Own!

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Branch, has announced the appointment of Dr. Georgina Eromosele as Chair of its newly formed Medical Rescue and Disaster Management Committee. The appointment, overseen by the State Executive Council (SEC), is part of a broader strategy to bolster Nigeria’s capacity for emergency medical response and disaster preparedness.

Dr. Eromosele, a seasoned healthcare leader with extensive experience in public health, will oversee an eight-member committee charged with developing policies and strategies to address medical crises across the region. The committee comprises top healthcare professionals, including Dr. Caroline Wemambu, Dr. Aghahowa Humphrey, Dr. Ngozi Onyeagwara, Dr. Tony Okpiavwe, Dr. Ferdinard Okolie, Dr. Emmanuel Okoeguale, Dr. Obasuyi, and Dr. Evelyn Okosun.

The committee’s primary goals include formulating a two-year action plan to improve disaster readiness, identifying potential social and environmental hazards, and mobilizing resources for preventive measures. Among its top priorities are creating rescue teams in health institutions throughout the state and providing targeted training for healthcare workers in disaster management.

Dr. Eromosele’s appointment builds on a remarkable career in medical leadership. She previously led the Vivian Centre, a key facility in Benin City addressing gender-based violence, and served as Head of the District Hospital in Ekiadolor, where she improved healthcare delivery in underserved communities. An advocate for sickle cell patients, Dr. Eromosele has also worked with the Sickle Cell Centre to enhance access to quality care for individuals living with the disease.

Her leadership credentials extend to her time as a two-term Secretary and two-term Vice President of the Association of Resident Doctors in Edo State, where she earned a reputation for dedication and innovation in public health.

In a statement following the appointment, NMA Chairman Dr. Eustace Oseghale praised Dr. Eromosele’s qualifications, saying, “Her leadership skills and deep expertise will be instrumental in strengthening our state’s ability to respond to medical emergencies and disasters effectively.”

The committee has also been tasked with raising funds to support its initiatives, with incentives provided for members who contribute to the fundraising efforts. Members will submit regular financial and progress reports to ensure transparency in their operations.

The NMA, headquartered at Doctor’s House beside UNIBEN Conoil in Benin City, will monitor and guide the committee’s activities. For more information, inquiries can be directed to edonma2024@gmail.com or through their website at edostatenma.com.
