Protests are enshrined in human DNA. Anytime you gather 10 people in one room and present a scenario to them for evaluation, more than likely, you will get 10 different opinions. A friend of mine used to say: If Moses was a committee, the Israelites would still be in Egypt arguing amongst themselves till this day. This probably informed the right to vote as a fundamental human right—-to wit—since we cannot get everyone to agree on everything, let’s make a decision by voting. Sometimes, even after a transparent vote, some people remain disgruntled and they become inclined to overthrowing the existing order to hopefully usher in a new order. One thing all Nigerians seem to agree on right now is the obvious situation of hyperinflation which has led to starvation in a land where there’s no drought. Are the protests desired?— Yes. Where will the hunger protests lead us? We do not know, but I hope it leads to fundamental reforms that will be implemented to enable real transformation. Will people die? It is inevitable because our law enforcement people are usually not kind to protesters. In the final analysis, I want to dream big—really big. Will the protests lead to reduced petroleum prices which will translate to lower inflation? Will the protests lead to political and economic reforms? Will the protests lead us to fundamental changes in the order of the Magna Carta? Here’s my prayer, Lord.
