The last hope for a medal from Paris was lost early on Friday morning as our dear Tobi Amusan was slow to get off the blocks. She lost to two people she had beaten previously in the Semifinals of the 200m race.
Notably, while some countries fielded up to 600 competitors, Nigeria had only 84.
Recall that there was a scandal regarding the kinds of things Nigerian officials do to athletes who just want to represent the country in 1980. It was called the Moscow sex scandal at the time. I do not have any recollection whether the final report was ever released. I can bet that at the core of that report would have been strong evidence of corruption.
For as long as we worship corruption above country, we will never do well in international competitions.
We are not without talents.
Whenever our people do well, it is never because the country treated them right—it is usually because they rose above the fray despite the country not treating them right.
Thank you, Tobi Amusan. Ride on, in spite of how you are treated.
John James.
