Letsile Tebogo, like the African Antelope galloped to victory in the 200 meters race at the Olympics yesterday, beating two Americans to second and third place. His gold medal is some sort of redemption for the African continent in these games.
Across the board, Africa has performed really poorly. The reason is not far-fetched. If Nigeria, giant of Africa does not do well, how can Africa do well? We are not short of talents. From the hills of Jos in Plateau State overflowing with long distance runners, to the heart of the rainforest in Esan land with its natural talents of acrobats to the pristine waters of Ijaw land where natural swimmers abound, Nigeria can start to prepare for the next Olympics in 2028.
We must make the necessary investments and preparations to hope for results whenever the world gathers. It is foolhardy for us to depend on luck and prayers instead of investment and hard work. I hope the President is watching the Olympics.
We look to Tobi Amusan to do us proud in the 100m hurdles today at 11:05 am not because we invested in her as a nation but because another country built her up. We’re actually lucky to still have her carrying the Nigerian flag.
