It has worked in the past. It may work again. In 1968, as Vietnam was about to be settled by the Lyndon Johnson Administration, Nixon’s people approached the Vietnamese urging them not to accept a ceasefire deal but to wait for a better deal under his administration. They fell for it. Nixon won and Vietnam escalated. Hundreds of thousands more lives were sacrificed to win an election.

In 1973, Watergate broke. For our younger readers, Watergate was about the break-in into the Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate Hotel by Republican operatives. Nixon was forced to resign. His crookedness caught up with him.
In 1980, as Jimmy Carter was running for re-election, events were unfolding in Tehran. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was ascending to power. The Shah’s regime was crumbling. Americans were held hostage. An attempted rescue by US forces was sabotaged. Jimmy Carter lost. The hostages were immediately released to Reagan. Once again, Karma does its thing. Iran has been a thorn in the flesh of the United States ever since. There’s always a price to pay.
Last May, a bipartisan group in the Senate of the United States came up with a strong Bill to once and for all, address the problems at the border. Trump did not like it. He telegraphed a message to Republicans to the effect—- if you solve this problem at the border, there will be nothing for me to campaign with. All Republicans except for Lisa Murkowski voted against the Bill.
Coming back home, President Jonathan was already dealing a decisive blow to Boko Haram in 2014/2015. Buhari and his people cried foul: “killing Boko Haram is killing my people.” Well, Buhari won. Karma never goes to sleep. Now, Nigeria is not only dealing with Boko Haram, but we are also dealing with ISIS, bandits, kidnappers, etc.
In all of these, one wonders— what lengths people go to achieve their ends at the expense of their people.
This is 2024. November 6 is coming. It is to be seen whether the border crisis will work for Trump or work against America. Karma is always around the corner.
