The nationwide protests against hunger which began on August 1 was missing one thing—-students. This time, many higher institutions sent everyone home a day before the protests began or set exams to begin or began graduation ceremonies.
Something else happened. The Federal Government had begun to disburse education loans to students. The reasoning was clear-headed in that demographic. “Why protest when our needs are being met?” a student told our correspondent. That was a deft move on the part of the Government.
Meanwhile, in Benin, the protests were largely peaceful because it was suspected that the State Government “helped” the protesters to protest. Nothing could be more clever. The protests were orderly and there were hardly any incidents. Recall that END SARS riots were the most violent in Benin at the time. There was fire everywhere. Even prison doors were thrown open by rioters. Many of the prisoners went home, had a good meal and reported back to the prison. Some were recaptured as far away as Borno State. Who says Government is not learning?
