In an attempt to resolve ongoing tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), governors elected on the party’s platform have nullified recent suspensions and ordered a return to the status quo. This decision, announced on October 15, 2024, comes after a series of internal conflicts that threatened the party’s unity.
How We Got Here
The recent turmoil began when the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) suspended key party officials, including Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary, and Kamaldeen Ajibade, the National Legal Adviser, citing allegations of disloyalty and insubordination. In response, Ologunagba’s camp announced counter-suspensions against acting National Chairman Iilya Damagum and other officials, leading to a deepening rift within the party.
Governors’ Intervention
Following two days of intense deliberations among the PDP Governors Forum, led by Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State, a consensus was reached to reinstate all suspended members. Mohammed reiterated that the party must prioritise unity and collaboration among its ranks. “We have resolved everything. There is no faction in the PDP,” he stated during a press briefing.
The governors affirmed that all suspensions had been lifted and urged members to set aside personal grievances for the greater good of the party. They also announced plans for an upcoming meeting on October 24 to further discuss strategies for moving forward.
Legal Considerations
The intervention comes in light of a recent court ruling that barred the PDP from removing Damagum from his position. Mohammed noted that while legal matters are ongoing, it is crucial for the party to focus on maintaining harmony among its members.
Reactions from Party Leadership
Both Bala Mohammed and Damagum expressed optimism about restoring peace within the PDP. Damagum remarked, “There is no crisis as far as I am concerned,” urging members and the media not to exacerbate tensions with speculative reporting.
As they prepare for the upcoming NEC meeting, party leaders are hopeful that this resolution will pave the way for renewed collaboration and focus on their collective goals. The PDP’s ability to navigate these internal challenges will be crucial as it seeks to strengthen its position ahead of future elections.
