The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has announced the passing of Rt. Rev. Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, Nigeria’s oldest Catholic priest, who died at the age of 104 on November 24, 2024. His death occurred in the early hours of Sunday at approximately 2:30 AM in Auchi, Edo State.
A Life of Service and Dedication
Monsignor Oleghe’s life spanned over a century during which he dedicated himself to the Catholic faith and the service of his community. In a statement released by Bishop Gabriel Dunia of the Auchi Diocese, the church expressed gratitude for Oleghe’s long and impactful life. “With gratitude to God for a life well lived on earth, I hereby inform you of the passing of Rt. Rev. MSGR Thomas Oleghe, the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria as of today,” the statement read.
Bishop Dunia described Oleghe’s contributions to the church and his unwavering commitment to his parishioners as exemplary. He noted that Oleghe’s gentle spirit and dedication to Christian values left a lasting legacy within the diocese and beyond.

The funeral service for Monsignor Oleghe is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. The diocese has invited members of the community and clergy to come together to celebrate his life and contributions to the church.
