In a move to prevent the rise of another group like Boko Haram in Nigeria’s northwestern region, the Senate has called on the Nigerian military to take immediate and effective action against the Lakurawa terrorist group. This resolution comes in response to a series of violent attacks attributed to the group, which has reportedly infiltrated Kebbi and Sokoto states from neighboring Burkina Faso and Mali.
Background of the Lakurawa Group
The Lakurawa group has gained notoriety for its violent activities, including a recent attack on November 8, 2024, in Mera village, Kebbi State, where over 20 people were killed and significant livestock was rustled. Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (PDP-Kebbi North), who sponsored the motion during a plenary session, emphasised the urgent need for military intervention to prevent further incursions by this armed group. He warned that if not contained, the Lakurawa group could expand its operations beyond the current hotspots, posing a broader threat to national security.
Senate Resolutions
During the session, senators unanimously supported a motion urging the military to enhance its presence in affected communities and collaborate with local populations to establish early warning systems. This proactive approach aims to detect potential attacks before they occur, thereby safeguarding vulnerable areas from future violence.
The Senate also directed that an assessment team be deployed to evaluate the extent of damage caused by recent attacks and determine immediate relief needs for displaced families. The resolution reflects a commitment to not only combating terrorism but also addressing humanitarian concerns arising from the conflict.
Concerns Over Military Preparedness
Senators expressed concern over the military’s readiness to confront this new wave of terrorism. Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau highlighted that the situation mirrors early warnings seen during the rise of Boko Haram, suggesting that failure to act decisively could lead to widespread devastation. He reiterated that security agencies must be adequately supported and equipped to tackle this evolving threat.
Senator Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto South) recalled past experiences with similar incursions and stressed that the current resurgence of Lakurawa poses a serious challenge that requires immediate attention from both military and government officials. He noted that these terrorists are well-armed and have potential international connections, which complicates their containment.
Government Response
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, commended the military for their prompt response to previous attacks but insisted on intensified efforts to eradicate the Lakurawa threat. He urged security forces not to spare any resources in dealing with these criminals, stressing that national security is paramount.
The Senate’s resolution underscores a critical moment in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against terrorism and banditry. As local communities continue to bear the brunt of violence, there is an urgent call for coordinated efforts between military forces, local governments, and community leaders to restore peace and stability in affected regions.
