On October 7, 2024, Israel commemorated the first anniversary of the devastating Hamas attack that took place a year ago, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people. The day was marked by emotional memorials and protests as the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the attack and the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Lebanon.
Commemorative Events
The day began with a moment of silence at 6:29 AM, the exact time when Hamas launched its assault on October 7, 2023. President Isaac Herzog led the remembrance at Kibbutz Reim, where many victims were killed during a music festival. Families of those lost gathered to honor their loved ones, with many expressing their grief through tears and shared memories.
In Tel Aviv, candlelight vigils were held, where friends and relatives lit candles for victims while holding placards demanding the return of hostages still held by Hamas. Thousands also gathered in cities worldwide, including London and Paris, to pay tribute to the victims and express solidarity with Israel.
Ongoing Conflict
As Israel marked this sombre anniversary, fighting continued on multiple fronts. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) reported that at least four projectiles were fired from Gaza shortly after the commemorations began. In response, Israel conducted airstrikes targeting Hamas launch sites and infrastructure throughout Gaza.
The anniversary coincides with heightened tensions in Lebanon, where Hezbollah has been firing rockets into northern Israel. The IDF confirmed that it was investigating failures in its air defence systems during these attacks.
International Reactions
President Herzog stressed the need for global support for Israel in its ongoing battle against what he termed “enemies.” He called for the international community to recognise the significance of standing with Israel during this turbulent time.
In contrast, protests have emerged worldwide, advocating for Palestinian rights amid ongoing violence in Gaza. The year since the attack has seen significant casualties on both sides, with nearly 42,000 Palestinians reported dead and many more displaced due to Israeli military operations.
The first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack serves as a painful reminder of the ongoing conflict that has engulfed both Israelis and Palestinians. As memorials take place and tensions escalate, it is clear that finding a resolution to this enduring conflict remains a complex and urgent challenge for all involved. The events of this day reflect not only on past tragedies but also on the pressing need for dialogue and peace in a region marked by violence and division.
