Edo Election: PDP Governors Deny Announcing Results as Obaseki Defends INEC Office Visit

In the wake of the recent Edo State gubernatorial election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors have firmly denied claims that they announced election results prematurely. This statement comes amid controversy surrounding the conduct of the election and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Clarification from PDP Governors

The PDP governors, during a press briefing held on September 18, 2024, emphasized that they have not made any official announcements regarding the election results. The governors expressed their commitment to ensuring a transparent electoral process and insisted that any declarations would come from INEC, which is mandated to oversee elections in Nigeria.

This clarification follows accusations from various political factions alleging that the PDP governors were attempting to influence the election outcome by announcing results before they were officially confirmed. The governors reiterated their support for a fair electoral process and urged all parties to respect the integrity of INEC.

Obaseki’s Defence of INEC

In a related development, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki defended his visit to the INEC office, stating that it was intended to ensure that all processes were being conducted transparently and in accordance with electoral laws. Obaseki emphasized that his administration values the role of INEC in maintaining democracy and is committed to upholding the rule of law throughout the electoral process.

“I visited INEC to express our commitment to a credible election and to ensure that all necessary measures are in place for a smooth process,” Obaseki stated. He called for patience among citizens as they await official results while asserting that any premature announcements could undermine public confidence in the electoral system.

Political Tensions in Edo State

The political atmosphere in Edo State remains charged as various parties prepare for potential disputes over the election results. Tensions have escalated between supporters of different political factions, with allegations of voter intimidation and irregularities surfacing during the election period.

Political analysts suggest that these developments could lead to legal challenges as parties seek to contest the results. The PDP governors have urged all stakeholders to prioritize peace and unity, emphasizing that democracy thrives best in an environment free from violence and intimidation.

As the dust settles on the Edo gubernatorial election, the PDP governors’ denial of announcing results and Governor Obaseki’s defense of INEC’s role highlight ongoing efforts to maintain electoral integrity. With political tensions high, it is crucial for all parties involved to adhere to democratic principles and work collaboratively towards a peaceful resolution. The focus now shifts to INEC as it prepares to announce official results, which will ultimately determine the future political landscape of Edo State.
