The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) has announced a groundbreaking initiative to support 20,000 African entrepreneurs with a $5,000 non-refundable seed fund each, totalling $100 million in financial assistance. This monumental announcement was made during the Future Investment Initiative New Africa Summit in Saudi Arabia by the foundation’s founder and chairman, Tony Elumelu.
Aiming for Economic Growth
Elumelu emphasised the critical role of entrepreneurship in driving economic growth across Africa. He stated that the foundation aims to address high unemployment rates and infrastructure deficits by empowering young entrepreneurs with the necessary resources to build thriving businesses. “In demonstrating Africapitalism, our group partners with the Tony Elumelu Foundation to help young African entrepreneurs,” he remarked.
The latest cohort of beneficiaries includes 1,104 entrepreneurs from 54 African countries, showcasing a diverse range of industries and sectors. This aligns with TEF’s mission to democratise opportunities and foster inclusive economic empowerment across the continent.
The Impact of TEF
Since its inception in 2015, the Tony Elumelu Foundation has focused on nurturing young talent and fostering entrepreneurship. To date, it has empowered over 20,000 individuals, who have collectively created more than 400,000 jobs and generated approximately $2.5 billion in revenue. These statistics highlight the transformative power of entrepreneurship and its ripple effect on communities throughout Africa.
Elumelu shared his vision during the announcement, stating, “We believe in spreading prosperity. The easiest way to do this is by identifying young entrepreneurs, encouraging them, and helping them start their own businesses.” This ethos has been central to TEF’s approach since its establishment.
