Wike Declares Atiku Has No Chance in PDP for 2027 Presidential Bid

The ongoing feud between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has escalated further. In a recent media chat in Abuja, Wike boldly declared that Atiku has no chance of securing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket for the 2027 presidential election.

Wike, known for his outspoken nature, asserted that Nigerians have repeatedly rejected Atiku at the polls. He stated, “Did he not present [his ideas] before Nigerians? Did Nigerians choose him? He is lobbying for another chance, but the chance will not be there.” The FCT minister further questioned the wisdom of relying on one individual for so many years, implying that it’s time for new leadership within the party.

This latest statement from Wike comes in response to Atiku’s recent claims that his economic blueprint would have better served Nigerians compared to the current administration’s approach. Wike dismissed these assertions, reminding that Atiku had already presented his ideas to the electorate in 2023, only to be rejected.

The conflict between these two PDP heavyweights has been a source of significant tension within the party. Their rift, which began after Wike lost the PDP presidential primary to Atiku in 2022, has led to a visible split in the party’s structure. A PDP chieftain, speaking anonymously, revealed that party organs are now divided, with factions loyal to either Atiku or Wike.

This division has stalled reconciliation efforts within the PDP. The party’s inability to speak with one voice has been attributed to the ongoing power struggle between these two influential figures.

Atiku’s camp, however, has not remained silent. Paul Ibe, Atiku’s media adviser, responded to Wike’s comments, describing them as “theatrical outbursts” driven by personal grievances. Ibe accused Wike of being more concerned with self-interest than addressing the real challenges faced by the nation.

As the 2027 election cycle approaches, this internal conflict poses a significant challenge for the PDP. The party, which seeks to position itself as a strong opposition and potential alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), finds itself grappling with internal discord that could potentially undermine its electoral prospects.
The situation remains fluid, with both Atiku and Wike maintaining their positions and support bases within the party. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the resolution of this conflict – or lack thereof – could play a crucial role in shaping the PDP’s future and its chances in the upcoming electoral contests.
