The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has voiced its disappointment regarding the National Working Committee‘s (NWC) failure to convene the long-awaited National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. This statement was made by Senator Adolphus Wabara, the BoT Chairman, during a meeting held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on December 5, 2024.

Importance of the NEC Meeting

Senator Wabara emphasised that the NEC meeting is crucial for addressing internal party issues and strategising for upcoming electoral engagements. He described the PDP as being at a critical juncture, needing to reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles and internal cohesion. “It is with a deep sense of disappointment that I must express the Board’s dismay at the continued shifting by the NWC in convening a NEC meeting,” he stated.

The NEC serves as an essential platform for decision-making and unity within the party, and Wabara criticised the NWC’s repeated delays as not only a breach of trust but also a potential catalyst for discord within the PDP. He urged the NWC to honour its commitments and ensure that the next scheduled meeting, planned for February 2025, proceeds without further postponements.

Criticism of Current Administration

In his address, Wabara did not shy away from critiquing the current administration under President Bola Tinubu. He highlighted the economic hardships faced by Nigerians due to what he termed “harsh economic policies,” which have exacerbated poverty levels across the country. “The skyrocketing cost of living, coupled with poorly implemented economic reforms, has pushed millions into deeper poverty,” he noted, calling on the PDP to present credible alternatives and amplify the struggles faced by citizens.

Call for Unity and Reconciliation

Wabara stressed that unity among PDP members is vital for overcoming internal challenges and effectively addressing national issues. He urged party leaders to prioritise collective goals over personal ambitions, stating, “We cannot afford to let personal ambitions or differences overshadow our shared vision for a better Nigeria.”

In an effort towards reconciliation, Wabara announced plans to engage with former Governor Nyesom Wike in the new year. This move aims to mend fences and foster lasting peace within the party, reflecting a proactive approach by the BoT to resolve internal rifts that could undermine the PDP’s effectiveness in future political contests.

As the festive season approaches, Senator Wabara extended Christmas wishes to all PDP members, encouraging them to embrace values of love, unity, and sacrifice that embody the spirit of the season. He concluded with a rallying call for all members to work towards a stronger and more united PDP capable of addressing both internal challenges and broader national issues.
