Peter Obi Criticises Fuel Price Hike as “Unfortunate and Insensitive”

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned the recent increase in fuel prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), describing the move as “unfortunate and insensitive.” The price of petrol has risen from ₦897 to ₦1,030 per litre, marking the second hike in a month, which has sparked widespread concern among Nigerians.

Obi’s Response

In a statement on his X account, Obi urged President Bola Tinubu, who also serves as the Minister of Petroleum, to reverse the decision. He emphasised the need for transparency and compassion in governance, criticising the lack of explanation for the price increase.

Obi stated, “As Nigerians continue to suffer under tough economic conditions, mostly caused by poor government policy choices, the NNPCL has again raised the price of fuel without any explanation. This is both unfortunate and insensitive.”

Economic Impact

The hike has led to a surge in transportation costs across major cities like Abuja and Lagos, exacerbating economic hardships for citizens. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has also expressed frustration over high costs, threatening to halt operations nationwide.

Call for Action

Obi called on the government to provide alternative solutions and address the confusion surrounding regulatory responsibilities between NNPCL and other agencies. He urged immediate action to alleviate the burden on Nigerians, stressing that “a new and more compassionate Nigeria is indeed possible.”
As fuel prices continue to rise, Obi’s criticism highlights the urgent need for government intervention to stabilize the economy and protect citizens from further hardship. The call for a reversal of the price hike resonates with many Nigerians facing increasing financial pressures.
