Uganda Airlines has officially commenced direct flight operations between Entebbe International Airport in Uganda and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Nigeria. The inaugural flight, which took place on September 12, 2024, marks a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity between East and West Africa.
Inaugural Flight and Reception
The inaugural flight, designated UR 900, departed Entebbe at 4:00 PM and arrived in Abuja at 6:15 PM, completing the journey in approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. This new route significantly reduces travel time compared to previous indirect flights, which could take up to 14 hours due to layovers in other countries.
Upon arrival, the flight was warmly welcomed by a delegation of Nigerian officials, including Dr. Hassan Ejibunu, Director of Air Transport, who represented the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. The Ugandan delegation was led by Fred Byamukama, the State Minister for Transport, along with other dignitaries and members of the Uganda Airlines team.
Importance of the New Route
The launch of direct flights to Abuja is a strategic move aimed at boosting trade, tourism, and investment between Uganda and Nigeria. Nelson Ocheger, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, emphasised that the new service will facilitate the movement of people and goods, ultimately enhancing bilateral relations. He stated, “This direct flight will reduce travel costs and improve accessibility, benefiting businesses and the overall economy in both countries.”
The Abuja route is the 14th destination for Uganda Airlines, which previously launched flights to Lagos in October 2023. By establishing this connection, Uganda Airlines aims to create a bridge that fosters economic, commercial, and social interactions between the two nations.
Enhancing Regional Connectivity
The introduction of direct flights aligns with the broader goal of improving intra-African connectivity. The Bilateral Air Service Agreement signed between Uganda and Nigeria in 2022 paved the way for this development, reflecting a commitment to enhancing collaboration in the aviation sector.
Byamukama noted that the new service would not only benefit travellers but also promote Uganda’s tourism sector by increasing the flow of Nigerian visitors. “This will take cultural interaction between Ugandans and Nigerians to the next level,” he added.
Future Prospects
Uganda Airlines plans to operate flights to Abuja twice a week, specifically on Thursdays and Sundays. The airline has introduced competitive fares, with economy class tickets priced at approximately $600 (₦983,460) and business class tickets at $1,665 (₦2,729,101) for the introductory period.
As both countries continue to strengthen their economic ties, the new direct flights are expected to play a crucial role in facilitating trade and investment opportunities, ultimately contributing to the growth of both economies.
The launch of direct flights from Entebbe to Abuja by Uganda Airlines marks a significant step towards enhancing connectivity between Uganda and Nigeria. By reducing travel time and costs, this new route is set to promote trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in fostering regional integration across Africa.
