President Tinubu Orders Immediate Release of Minors Detained Over Protests

President Tinubu

In a move most likely influenced by  public outcry, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of all minors detained in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protests that erupted across the country in August 2024. This decision comes in response to widespread criticism regarding the treatment of these young individuals, many of whom were charged with serious offences, including treason and public disturbance.

Background of the Protests

The protests, which were sparked by escalating living costs and widespread dissatisfaction with government policies, saw thousands of Nigerians take to the streets. Among those arrested were 76 individuals, including 30 minors aged between 14 and 17. Eyewitness accounts and disturbing images from court proceedings revealed that several minors appeared malnourished and fainted due to exhaustion, igniting outrage from both civil society and political leaders.

The minors had been held in custody for over three months, facing charges that could potentially lead to severe penalties, including the death sentence. Their arraignment in court last week, where some collapsed due to poor health conditions, prompted a wave of condemnation from human rights organisations and politicians alike.

Presidential Directive

On November 4, 2024, Tinubu directed the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to ensure the swift release of all minors involved in the protests. In his statement, he emphasised that this action was taken without prejudice to any ongoing legal proceedings, highlighting a commitment to humanitarian principles alongside legal considerations.

“The president has directed that all minors arrested by the police be released,” said Information Minister Mohammed Idris. “This directive reflects a deep commitment to democracy and the protection of our youth.” Additionally, Tinubu tasked the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs with overseeing the safe return of these minors to their families.

Reactions and Implications

The announcement has been met with relief from families affected by the detentions and has sparked discussions about the broader implications for youth activism in Nigeria. Many see this as a pivotal moment for human rights in the country, particularly concerning how minors are treated within the legal system.

Senator Sani Musa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, commended Tinubu’s decision as a compassionate response to public outcry. He stated, “This action demonstrates a profound commitment to justice and humanity and reflects true leadership.”

Conversely, critics have pointed out that this situation underscores systemic issues within Nigeria’s law enforcement and judicial processes. The treatment of these minors raises questions about how authorities handle dissent and protect vulnerable populations during civil unrest.

As investigations into their arrests continue, this decision may serve as a catalyst for reforming how authorities engage with young protesters and manage civil demonstrations in the future. The ongoing discourse surrounding this issue just shows the need for accountability and compassion in governance, especially when it comes to protecting the rights of children and young people in Nigeria.
