Governors Express Solidarity with Flood Victims in Borno State

In the wake of the devastating floods that have impacted Borno State, a coalition of governors from various states has come together to extend their support and solidarity to the victims. The floods, triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, have displaced over 414,000 individuals and led to significant destruction across Maiduguri and its surrounding areas.

Calls for Urgent Assistance

In response to the crisis, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has called on the federal government to declare a state of emergency in Maiduguri and mobilise resources for immediate relief efforts. ALGON’s National President, Aminu Mua’zu Maifata, expressed condolences to the victims and urged swift action to provide necessary support, including food, medical aid, and shelter.

“We must act urgently to alleviate the suffering of the people of Maiduguri,” Maifata stated. “The scale of this disaster requires a multi-stakeholder approach to ensure that those affected receive the assistance they need.”

A Unified Response

During a recent visit to Maiduguri, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, led by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, met with Governor Babagana Zulum to assess the situation and express their condolences. Governor Abdulrazaq emphasised the need for immediate action, stating, “This is a huge humanitarian crisis, which requires that we all rally around the victims.” He assured the Borno State government of their support and conveyed messages to the federal government for increased assistance.

Support from Other Governors

Several governors joined Abdulrazaq in Maiduguri, including Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, and Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State. Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his heartfelt sympathy, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected by this disaster. As a nation, it is important that we come together to provide relief and assist in rescue operations.”

Governor Fintiri also shared his sentiments, saying, “What I saw was truly heartbreaking – the loss of lives, homes, and livelihoods. Adamawa State stands with Borno in this difficult time.” He pledged essential resources to aid recovery efforts and called for swift action from the federal government and all stakeholders to prevent future flooding incidents.

Northern Governors’ Forum

The Northern States Governors’ Forum, chaired by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, has also expressed deep concern for the residents of Borno. In a statement, Yahaya extended assurances of solidarity and support to Governor Zulum and the people of Borno, particularly those affected by the flooding. He urged the federal government and humanitarian organisations to bolster their relief efforts and commended the swift response of the Borno State government.

Federal Government Involvement

In addition to the governors’ efforts, the federal government has acknowledged the severity of the situation. Vice President Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno State, visited Maiduguri to oversee the implementation of flood mitigation measures. He praised the resilience of the community and emphasised the government’s commitment to providing necessary resources for recovery efforts.

The collective response from governors across Nigeria underscores the importance of solidarity in times of crisis. As Borno State grapples with the aftermath of the devastating floods, the support from fellow governors and the federal government will be crucial in providing relief and facilitating recovery for the affected communities. The ongoing efforts highlight the resilience of the Nigerian people and their commitment to standing together in the face of adversity.
