The Nigerian political landscape is in mourning following the death of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives. Onanuga, affectionately known as Ijaya, passed away on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness. Her death was confirmed in a statement by the House spokesperson, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., who expressed profound sorrow over the loss.

Adewunmi Onanuga, born on December 2, 1965, represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State. She was first elected to the House in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and quickly established herself as a committed advocate for her constituents. During her first term, she served as the chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she championed policies aimed at empowering women and enhancing social welfare.

Following her reelection in 2023, Onanuga was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, becoming a prominent female leader in Nigeria’s legislative body. Her leadership and dedication earned her respect among colleagues and constituents alike.
