As the September 21 governorship election approaches, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has voiced serious concerns regarding the Nigeria Police’s ability to ensure a fair and secure electoral environment. Speaking at a press conference on September 10, 2024, Obaseki expressed a lack of confidence in the police, alleging that their actions have shown a clear bias in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the main opposition party.
Allegations of Police Harassment
Obaseki highlighted the ongoing arrests of key members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), including local government officials, as evidence of police misconduct. He stated, “A local government chairman has been arrested in connivance with the opposition party to intimidate members of our party.” The governor emphasised that such actions threaten the integrity of the electoral process and could lead to a state-wide crisis.
The governor’s remarks come amid reports that at least 10 PDP members have been detained without trial in Abuja, raising alarms about the fairness of the upcoming elections. “If the Commissioner of Police can undermine my authority as the Chief Security Officer of the State, then I don’t know how to stop this,” Obaseki lamented.
Call for IGP Intervention
In light of these developments, Obaseki has reached out to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), urging for immediate intervention to address the perceived bias and restore confidence in the police’s role as impartial enforcers of the law. He stated, “We might not likely sign this peace agreement if the police continue to act in the interest of one party.”
The governor’s concerns reflect a broader unease within the PDP regarding the police’s role in the electoral process. He noted that the police’s actions have created an environment of fear, driving party leaders into hiding and undermining the democratic process.
Urging Calm and Peaceful Conduct
Despite the tense situation, Obaseki has called on his supporters to remain calm and peaceful as they await the outcome of his discussions with the IGP. He warned that any escalation of violence in Edo could have national repercussions, stating, “Edo is a very unique state and should not be held responsible if a crisis emerges.”
As the Edo 2024 elections draw near, Governor Obaseki’s alarm over police bias and intimidation highlights the critical need for a fair and transparent electoral process. The actions of the police in the lead-up to the elections will be closely scrutinised as both the PDP and the APC prepare for a contest that could significantly impact the political landscape in Edo State. The governor’s appeal for intervention from the IGP underscores the importance of restoring public trust in law enforcement as the state navigates this pivotal moment in its democratic journey.
