In a heartfelt announcement, music icon Elton John has revealed that he has lost his eyesight due to a severe eye infection he contracted earlier this year. The 77-year-old singer made this disclosure during a recent appearance at the gala performance of *The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical* in London, where he expressed his struggles with vision loss and the impact it has had on his life and career.
Health Challenges
During the gala on December 1, 2024, John addressed the audience, stating, “As many of you know, I’ve lost my eyesight. It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it.” He confirmed that he lost vision in his right eye in July while in the south of France, and it has been four months since he has been able to see clearly. Despite these challenges, he expressed gratitude for the support he has received from his husband, David Furnish, who has been a constant source of strength during this difficult time.

In an interview with Good Morning America, John elaborated on his condition, noting that while there is hope for recovery, he currently struggles with basic tasks such as reading lyrics or watching performances. “I can’t see anything; I can’t read anything; I can’t watch anything,” he shared. He described feeling “stuck” in his creative process due to the limitations imposed by his eyesight.
The Impact of the Infection
John first publicly addressed his vision issues in September 2024, revealing on Instagram that he had been dealing with a severe eye infection that left him with limited vision. He described the healing process as slow and emphasised that it would take time before sight returns to the affected eye.
Eye infections can arise from various causes, including bacteria, fungi, or viruses. They can lead to serious complications if not treated promptly. In John’s case, the infection has significantly impacted his ability to engage fully in his musical projects. Despite this setback, he remains optimistic about his recovery and is grateful for the care provided by medical professionals.
Continuing His Musical Journey
Despite his health challenges, Elton John continues to be involved in music. He composed the score for The Devil Wears Prada, a musical adaptation of the popular film that premiered at the Dominion Theatre. Although he has been unable to attend many previews due to his eyesight issues, he remains committed to his creative endeavors. John’s resilience shines through as he navigates this difficult chapter in his life. He recently announced an upcoming documentary titled Elton John: Never Too Late, which chronicles his remarkable journey and will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting December 13.
