In a recent address, Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder of Covenant University and the Living Faith Church Worldwide, defended the decision to increase tuition fees at the institution, asserting that the move was divinely inspired. During a telecast to a gathering in Jos, Oyedepo emphasised that the increase was not merely a financial decision but a godly directive aimed at enhancing the university’s ability to provide quality education.
The Fee Increase Explained
Covenant University, known for its commitment to academic excellence and moral integrity, has set its tuition fees for the 2024/2025 academic session between ₦937,500 and ₦1,002,500, depending on the course of study. This adjustment has raised eyebrows among parents and students, prompting discussions about the affordability of higher education in Nigeria.
Bishop Oyedepo stated, “This fee increase has God’s approval and aligns with the quality of facilities provided by the university to meet the educational needs of the nation.” He insisted that the fees charged are justified when compared to other institutions that may lack adequate resources and infrastructure.
Response to Criticism
In his address, Oyedepo addressed the criticism directed at the university regarding the fee hike. He urged detractors to refrain from voicing their complaints, warning that such actions could incur divine retribution. He recounted an incident involving a critic who suffered from a peculiar ailment as a consequence of their disparaging remarks about the university’s fees, suggesting that spiritual intervention was required for their recovery.
The Bishop emphasised that the criticisms stem from ignorance and a lack of understanding of the university’s mission to raise morally upright and academically competent graduates. He reiterated that the fees are essential for maintaining the high standards of education that Covenant University is known for.
Commitment to Educational Excellence
Covenant University has consistently been recognised for its academic achievements and innovative programs. The institution aims to provide an environment conducive to learning, with state-of-the-art facilities and a focus on character development. Oyedepo’s comments highlight the university’s commitment to not only academic excellence but also the moral upbringing of its students.
In addition to the fee increase, the university has plans to expand its educational offerings, including the establishment of offshore campuses to further its mission of providing quality education globally.
As the university continues to navigate the challenges of providing quality education in Nigeria, the emphasis on maintaining high standards and fostering a conducive learning environment remains paramount. The dialogue surrounding the fee increase reflects broader concerns about accessibility and affordability in higher education, prompting ongoing discussions among stakeholders in the academic community.By Joseph Johnston,
