In a significant decision, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of Nigeria has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University. This announcement was made on December 16, 2024, by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following a meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Honouring a Statesman

The renaming is to honour Yakubu Gowon

The renaming is intended to honour General Yakubu Gowon, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1966 to 1975 during a tumultuous period marked by the Nigerian Civil War. The decision reflects recognition of Gowon’s contributions to nation-building and his efforts to promote unity and stability in Nigeria after the civil conflict. Idris emphasised that this name change is part of a broader initiative to acknowledge the legacies of prominent Nigerian leaders.

Legislative Approval Required

While the FEC has made this decision, it must still be approved by the National Assembly before it can take effect. The minister indicated that the council would formally write to the assembly to initiate the legislative process necessary for the name change.

Background on the University of Abuja

Established in 1988, the University of Abuja was designed as a dual-mode institution capable of offering both conventional and distance learning programs. It was notable for being one of the first universities in Nigeria with such a dual mandate at inception. The university currently comprises nine faculties, including health sciences, and has been pivotal in providing higher education access to students across Nigeria.

Reactions and Implications

The renaming of the university is expected to elicit various reactions from stakeholders in the education sector and beyond. Supporters may view this as a positive step toward honouring historical figures who have shaped Nigeria’s trajectory, while critics might question the implications of such changes on institutional identity and resources.
