Bode George Urges Atiku Abubakar to Retire His 31-Year Presidential Ambition

Chief Bode George, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Deputy National Chairman, has publicly advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to retire his long-standing ambition for the presidency. Speaking at a press conference in Ikoyi, Lagos, George emphasized that it is time for Atiku to step back from the political arena, particularly as the 2027 presidential election approaches.

A Call for Reflection

Bode George’s remarks come as a response to Atiku’s persistent pursuit of the presidency, which dates back to 1993. He noted that Atiku will be 81 years old in 2027 and urged him to embrace the role of an elder statesman rather than continuing his quest for political power. “To Atiku, my advice is this: you will be 81 years old in 2027. This is the time for you to calm down and act like an elder,” George stated. He appealed to Atiku to consider leaving a legacy for future generations instead of pursuing another presidential campaign.

George criticized the current state of the PDP, arguing that internal divisions and personal ambitions have overshadowed the party’s collective goals. He lamented that many party members prioritise their interests over national concerns, which he believes is contributing to the party’s decline.

Criticism of Party Dynamics

The former PDP chieftain did not hold back in his criticism of what he termed “divisive, arrogant” members of the party who are allegedly colluding with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He called out those who fail to defect from the PDP while simultaneously undermining its unity, describing them as “cowards.”

George specifically addressed the ongoing tensions between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike, urging Wike to “cool off” and work towards reconciliation rather than further exacerbating divisions within the party. He questioned why some party members are not advocating for unity instead of fueling conflicts for their selfish interests.

The Importance of Zoning

In his broader message, George reiterated the importance of adhering to zoning principles within the PDP. He argued that after eight years of northern leadership under former President Muhammadu Buhari, it is crucial for the PDP to field a southern candidate in 2027. He invoked the party’s constitution, which emphasizes fairness and equity through zoning and rotation.

George expressed his commitment to ensuring that these principles are respected within the party, stating, “In 2027, the concept of ‘Turn-by-Turn Nigeria Limited’ must be strictly followed by our party.” He believes that this approach is essential for maintaining justice within Nigeria’s political landscape.

Atiku’s Response

In response to George’s comments, Atiku Abubakar has maintained that he remains focused on addressing pressing national issues rather than contemplating his political future. His spokesperson emphasized that Atiku’s current priority is alleviating the suffering of Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu’s administration rather than discussing 2027 aspirations.

Atiku has previously indicated his intention to continue contesting for the presidency as long as he is healthy, having run for office six times already. His resilience in pursuing political office reflects a deep-seated commitment to his vision for Nigeria’s future.

As Nigeria approaches another election cycle, these discussions will likely shape the political landscape and influence voter sentiments in the years to come. The interplay between established political figures like Atiku and emerging voices like George will be crucial in determining the direction of Nigeria’s future leadership.
