Yahaya Bello Arrested by EFCC Over Alleged Multi-Billion Naira Fraud

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) amid serious allegations of fraud, including money laundering and misappropriation of approximately N80.2 billion. The arrest occurred on November 26, 2024, at the EFCC office in Abuja, where Bello was brought in by the current Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo.

Details of the Arrest

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that Bello was apprehended at 12:54 PM and is currently undergoing interrogation. Contrary to initial reports suggesting that he voluntarily surrendered to the commission, Oyewale clarified that he was indeed arrested by EFCC operatives. Bello arrived at the EFCC office accompanied by three lawyers.

This arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into Bello’s financial dealings during his tenure as governor, which lasted from January 2016 to January 2024. The EFCC had previously declared him wanted in April 2024 after multiple unsuccessful attempts to detain him.

Background on Allegations

The allegations against Bello include withdrawing $720,000 from state funds to cover his child’s school fees abroad, among other financial misconducts. The EFCC has filed a 19-count charge against him, primarily centered on money laundering and breach of trust.

Bello’s legal troubles intensified following an August 20 ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which mandated him to present himself for arraignment. Despite this ruling, his previous appearances had been marked by evasion, with claims from his legal team that he was in hiding due to safety concerns.

Political Implications

The arrest of Yahaya Bello has sparked discussions about accountability and corruption within Nigeria’s political landscape. As a high-profile figure, his case is expected to serve as a litmus test for the EFCC’s resolve in tackling corruption among political elites. The commission’s actions are seen as part of broader efforts to restore public confidence in governance and combat impunity among former officials.
