Explosion Rocks APC Secretariat in Rivers State Hours Before Local Government Elections

An explosion occurred at the All Progressives Congress (APC) state secretariat in Port Harcourt early on October 5, 2024, just hours before the highly anticipated local government elections. The blast has raised significant security concerns and heightened tensions in the region.

Details of the Incident

Preliminary reports indicate that suspected arsonists detonated explosives at the APC secretariat, causing damage to the main gate and security post. Video footage circulating on social media suggests that dynamite was used in the attack. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, but the explosion has left party officials and local residents on edge.

Chief Tony Okocha, chairman of the APC’s caretaker committee, accused supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara of orchestrating the attack. He claimed that “pro-Fubara civilian soldiers” were responsible for the explosion and attempted to set the building ablaze, a second attempt that was thwarted by security personnel stationed at the site.

Okocha stated, “At the wee hours of Saturday, pro-Fubara civilian soldiers detonated dynamites at our office. The second attempt to set it ablaze was foiled as the security at the gate quickly put out the fire.”

Political Context

The explosion comes amid a politically charged atmosphere in Rivers State, where both the APC and ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have announced their non-participation in the local government elections. This decision follows a Federal High Court ruling that barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing voter registration data to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

Governor Fubara has declared public holidays leading up to the elections and emphasized that conducting them is essential to avoid governance by unelected officials. He warned against any disruptions during this critical period and assured residents of his administration’s commitment to maintaining order.

Security Measures

In light of recent events, security measures have been heightened across Port Harcourt and surrounding areas. The Rivers State Police Command has stated that it will not provide security for the elections due to compliance with court rulings but will remain vigilant to prevent any disturbances.

Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police, assured citizens that while they would not participate in election duties, they would act swiftly to maintain peace and order. She stated, “The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to maintaining law and order and will not stand idly by in the face of potential disturbances.”

As political factions prepare for a contentious electoral process, concerns about safety and security remain paramount. With both major parties withdrawing from participation, all eyes will be on how events unfold on election day and what implications this will have for governance in Rivers State moving forward.
