ollowing the recent arrest of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), his aides have publicly defended him, asserting that he has “nothing to hide.” Okowa, who served as governor from 2015 to 2023 and was the vice presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, is facing allegations of misappropriating approximately ₦1.3 trillion in oil derivation funds.
Background of the Arrest
Okowa was taken into custody after voluntarily reporting to the EFCC’s office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in response to an official summons. The allegations against him include claims of diverting state funds for personal gain, including investments in Premium Trust Bank and the construction of luxury estates and hotels in Asaba and Abuja. The EFCC’s investigation has raised significant concerns about the management of public resources during Okowa’s tenure as governor.
Aide’s Defense
In a statement issued by Olisa Ifeajika, Okowa’s former chief press secretary, the ex-governor’s camp characterised the allegations as “gross misrepresentations” and “distortions of facts.” Ifeajika emphasised that the accusations stem from a “campaign of calumny” orchestrated by political opponents who view Okowa as a significant threat to their ambitions for the 2027 elections.
Ifeajika stated, “Dr. Okowa has nothing to hide. He governed Delta State with fiscal discipline and excellent service delivery.” He further asserted that the EFCC has yet to substantiate any claims against Okowa, insisting that the former governor’s actions were transparent and above board.
Allegations Dismissed
The aide dismissed specific allegations regarding Okowa’s supposed financial interests in various projects. He clarified that the estate in Abuja is owned by a public figure and that Okowa resides in a private home occupied by other homeowners in Asaba. Additionally, he stated that the owners of the hotels in Asaba are well-known individuals with no ties to Okowa.
Ifeajika described the claim that Okowa diverted ₦1.3 trillion as “ludicrous” and “outlandish,” reiterating that these accusations had previously been raised during his time in office but were proven unfounded.
Political Reactions
The PDP has rallied behind Okowa, accusing the EFCC of political witch-hunting. Timothy Osadolor, the party’s national deputy youth leader, called for Okowa’s immediate release, arguing that his detention is part of a broader strategy to silence opposition leaders. Osadolor criticised the EFCC for appearing biased and suggested that it should operate independently rather than as an extension of the ruling party. As investigations continue, Ifeanyi Okowa remains adamant about his innocence and commitment to transparency. His aides maintain that he will cooperate fully with authorities while seeking justice against what they describe as unfounded allegations.
