The Kwara State Government has taken decisive action against a teacher at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, following the brutal assault of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The incident, which occurred on November 28, 2024, has sparked public outrage and raised serious concerns about the treatment of corps members in educational institutions.

Incident Details
The female corps member, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons, was reportedly assaulted by a teacher after allegedly failing to greet her properly. Eyewitnesses described a disturbing scene where the teacher not only verbally berated the corps member but also physically attacked her, tearing her NYSC uniform and slapping her. This incident occurred while the corps member was at the school to collect her clearance letter.
The assault quickly drew attention and condemnation from various quarters, leading to calls for an investigation into the matter. The NYSC’s Head of Information and Public Relations in Kwara State, Morakinyo Oladipo, confirmed the incident and stated that steps were being taken to seek justice for the assaulted corps member.

Government Response
In response to the public outcry, the Kwara State Government launched an investigation into the incident. Following a thorough inquiry, it was determined that the teacher involved, identified as Fatimoh Hamzat Nike, had engaged in unprofessional conduct. The findings revealed that she was guilty of fighting on duty, using foul language, and showing insubordination towards the corps member.
As a result of these findings, the state government announced that Hamzat would be demoted by two grade levels and transferred out of her current school. Additionally, she is required to undergo counselling sessions to address her behaviour. The Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, emphasised that such behaviour is unacceptable and does not reflect the values of Kwara State.

NYSC’s Reaction
In light of the incident and to ensure the safety of its members, the NYSC has temporarily withdrawn all corps members assigned to both the junior and senior sections of Government Day Junior Secondary School. This decision was made following a visit by NYSC Director General Brigadier General Y. D. Ahmed to address the situation directly.
Oladipo Morakinyo confirmed this withdrawal, stating that it was a precautionary measure to protect all corps members from potential harm while investigations are ongoing.
