Popular Nigerian social media personality Bobrisky, also known as Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju, was removed from a KLM flight bound for Amsterdam late on October 31, 2024. The incident occurred as Bobrisky attempted to leave Nigeria but was intercepted by immigration officers, allegedly at the behest of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Incident Unfolds
Eyewitnesses reported that Bobrisky was taken off the aircraft shortly before takeoff, leading to a chaotic scene at the airport. Following the removal, Bobrisky took to Instagram to share his distressing experience, claiming he sustained injuries during an altercation with the officers. In a post that quickly garnered attention, he pleaded for help from his followers, stating, “Nigerians, help me; EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured.”
This incident follows a series of legal troubles for Bobrisky, including a previous arrest at the Sème border earlier in October while allegedly attempting to flee the country. His ongoing issues with the EFCC have raised questions about his financial dealings and personal conduct.

Background of Legal Troubles
Bobrisky’s legal challenges began earlier in 2024 when he was sentenced to six months in prison for naira abuse. Although he was initially incarcerated at Kirikiri Prison, reports surfaced that he spent only three weeks in custody before being moved to a private location under controversial circumstances. Allegations of bribery emerged, suggesting that Bobrisky had paid officials approximately ₦15 million to secure preferential treatment during his imprisonment.
The situation escalated further in September when an audio recording surfaced, allegedly featuring Bobrisky making defamatory claims about prominent figures in Nigerian society. This led to legal threats from those named in the recording, intensifying the scrutiny surrounding his actions.
Public Reaction
The removal of Bobrisky from the flight has sparked a wave of mixed reactions across social media platforms. Supporters expressed their concern for his well-being, while critics questioned his past actions and the legality of his financial dealings. The incident has reignited discussions about the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria, where societal norms often clash with personal identities.
Bobrisky’s flamboyant persona and controversial lifestyle have made him a polarising figure in Nigerian culture. While he has garnered substantial fame and influence through social media, his legal troubles have cast a shadow over his public image.
