President Tinubu Directs FRSC to Enhance Highway Monitoring Following Kaduna Accident

In the wake of a tragic road accident in Kaduna State that resulted in the deaths of at least 40 Muslim worshippers, President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to improve monitoring on highways and implement measures to reduce road accidents nationwide. The directive comes as the nation mourns the loss of lives during a journey to celebrate Eid-el-Maulud, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and urged the FRSC to take immediate action to enhance road safety measures. “I have directed the Federal Roads Safety Commission to improve highway monitoring and reduce the number of road accidents nationwide,” he stated. The president emphasised that such tragedies should not be commonplace and called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

Road Safety Challenges in Nigeria

Road accidents are a significant concern in Nigeria, with statistics indicating that over 1,470 fatalities occurred due to road crashes during the first quarter of 2024 alone, averaging approximately 16 deaths per day. Factors contributing to these accidents include poor road conditions, vehicle quality, reckless driving behaviour, and inadequate enforcement of safety regulations.

The FRSC has been tasked with ensuring that drivers adhere to safety protocols, including speed limits and proper vehicle maintenance. Sector Commander Kabiru Nadabo reiterated the importance of road safety measures following the tragic incident, stating, “This accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving.”

As investigations continue into the causes of this accident, it serves as a critical reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in road safety management across the country.
