The Sokoto State Government has raised alarms over the emergence of a new terrorist group known as Lakurawas, which has begun operating in five local government areas of the state. This announcement was made by the State Deputy Governor, Idris Gobir, during a recent meeting with participants from the National Defence College in Abuja on November 5, 2024.

Overview of the Threat

According to Deputy Governor Gobir, the Lakurawas group is identified as a faith-based idealist organisation that poses a significant threat to security in the region. Assessments conducted by state authorities revealed that the group possesses sophisticated weapons and has been involved in various criminal activities across the local government areas of Tangaza, Gudu, Ilela, Silame, and Binji.

Gobir emphasised that the emergence of this group coincides with ongoing banditry activities in Sokoto, complicating an already precarious security situation. He stated, “The threat is expanding, and the security authorities are working assiduously to address this emerging threat.” The deputy governor also noted that the state government is collaborating closely with federal security agencies to confront these security challenges and protect the lives and properties of citizens.

Activities and Ideology

Reports indicate that members of Lakurawas are heavily armed and have begun imposing strict Islamic laws on local communities. They are believed to be recruiting young people by offering business capital and other incentives while preaching against Western civilisation and democratic governance. Residents have expressed deep concerns about the group’s activities, noting that they do not recognise the Nigerian government or its security forces.

A resident from one of the affected areas described how Lakurawas operatives move from community to community, spreading their ideology and enforcing their rules. “During sermons, they tell us they don’t recognise the Nigerian government,” he said, highlighting the group’s defiance towards established authority.

Broader Context of Insecurity

The emergence of Lakurawas adds to a growing list of security challenges facing Sokoto State, which has been plagued by various terrorist groups and banditry for years. The region has seen an increase in violence and criminal activities, with many communities suffering from attacks, kidnappings, and extortion.

This latest development comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with multiple security crises across different regions. The rise of new terrorist factions like Lakurawas raises concerns about the effectiveness of existing security measures and the need for comprehensive strategies to combat terrorism and restore peace.

Government Response

In light of this new threat, Sokoto’s state government is expected to ramp up efforts to address insecurity. The Deputy Governor’s remarks signal an urgent call for action as authorities seek to understand the nature of these emerging groups and develop effective countermeasures.

As discussions continue among security agencies and local leaders, there are hopes that insights gained from recent assessments will lead to more effective strategies for safeguarding communities against rising extremism and violence.
