In response to the ongoing blackout affecting Northern Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the deployment of the Nigerian Army and Air Force to protect engineers from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) as they work to repair damaged transmission lines. This directive comes after weeks of power outages that have severely disrupted social and economic activities in the North.
The blackout, which has impacted states in the North-West, North-East, and parts of North-Central Nigeria, was caused by the disruption of two 330kV Ugwaji-Apir Double Circuit transmission lines. The President expressed his concern over the situation, stressing the need for immediate action to restore electricity to the affected regions.
President Tinubu’s decision to deploy military personnel aims to ensure the safety of TCN engineers working on the repairs. The President also urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to assist security agencies in protecting public assets and infrastructure.
Negative Economic Impact on the North
The prolonged blackout has had significant negative effects on the economy in Northern Nigeria. The lack of electricity has paralysed businesses, leading to reduced productivity and financial losses. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which rely heavily on a stable power supply, have been particularly hard hit. Many businesses have been forced to shut down temporarily, resulting in job losses and decreased economic activity.
Additionally, the blackout has disrupted essential services such as healthcare and education. Hospitals and clinics have struggled to operate without a reliable power supply, affecting patient care and medical services. Schools have also been impacted, with students unable to attend classes or access online learning resources.
The deployment of military personnel to protect TCN engineers is a necessary step to expedite the repair process and restore electricity. However, the economic repercussions of the blackout highlight the urgent need for a long-term solution to Nigeria’s power infrastructure challenges. Ensuring a stable and reliable power supply is crucial for the economic development and well-being of the Northern region.
