Gov. Abiodun Hosts Lateef Adedimeji and Wife Ahead of Lisabi Movie Premiere

In a show of support for the film industry, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun hosted renowned filmmaker Lateef Adedimeji and his wife Adebimpe Oyebade  on September 18, 2024, ahead of the much-anticipated premiere of their historical film, Lisabi. The movie, which chronicles the life of the legendary Yoruba hero Lisabi Agbogbon Akala, is set to debut on Netflix on September 27, 2024.

Celebrating Yoruba Heritage

During the meeting, Governor Abiodun emphasised the importance of storytelling in preserving cultural heritage and educating younger generations about historical figures who shaped Nigeria. He praised Adedimeji for his commitment to bringing significant Yoruba narratives to the big screen and reiterated the need for such stories to be told authentically by those who understand their cultural significance.

“We must ensure that our youths appreciate the sacrifices made by our heroes through films that depict their stories,” Abiodun stated. He expressed his administration’s readiness to support initiatives that promote local culture and traditions through cinema.

Plans for a Film Village

Adedimeji, who serves as both the executive producer and lead actor in “Lisabi,” shared his vision for developing a film village in Ogun State. He highlighted that this project aims to create a hub for filmmakers to produce stories rooted in Ogun’s rich history. “We have made a movie that has to do with one of our heroes, ‘Lisabi Agbogbon Akala.’ It is essential that we establish a film village here in Ogun State to ensure our stories are filmed where they originated,” he explained.

The filmmaker expressed gratitude for the governor’s support and encouraged collaboration between the government and creative professionals to foster growth in Nigeria’s film industry. “We are looking forward to building this film village near Ogun State Television, which will attract filmmakers from all over,” he added.

About Lisabi

Lisabi tells the compelling story of an 18th-century Egba farmer who led his people in a rebellion against the oppressive Oyo Empire. The film aims to highlight Lisabi’s bravery and the significant impact he had on Yoruba history. It features a star-studded cast, including notable actors such as Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola, Ibrahim Itele Yekini, and Mo Bimpe.

The movie will be released in two parts: Lisabi: The Uprising on September 27 and Lisabi: A Legend is Born in January 2025. Adedimeji hopes that this film will not only entertain but also educate audiences about their heritage.

As “Lisabi” prepares for its premiere, it represents a significant step towards celebrating Yoruba heritage through cinema. With plans for a dedicated film village, Ogun State is poised to become a central hub for filmmaking in Nigeria.
