The Labour Party (LP) has firmly rejected allegations suggesting that it is secretly collaborating with President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in preparation for the upcoming 2027 general elections. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, issued a statement on November 22, 2024, in response to claims made by human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju in a viral video.
Response to Allegations
In the video, Adeyanju accused the LP leadership of working alongside Tinubu’s loyalists to facilitate the president’s return to power in 2027. However, Ifoh dismissed these assertions as unfounded and a product of Adeyanju’s imagination. He challenged the activist to provide concrete evidence to support his claims, stating, “All what he said about the Labour Party is untrue, lies, and unfounded.”
Ifoh emphasised that the LP, under the leadership of its National Chairman Julius Abure, remains one of the most vocal and visible opposition forces in Nigerian politics since the 2023 elections. He reiterated that the party has consistently refuted any allegations of collusion with the ruling party.
Commitment to Opposition
The LP’s statement highlighted its dedication to critiquing government policies and advocating for electoral reforms. Ifoh pointed out that the party has established an electoral reform committee aimed at ensuring credible and transparent elections in Nigeria. He stressed that the LP has been critical of Tinubu’s administration and has no intentions of supporting his re-election.
“IPOB has on several occasions spiritedly debunked the allegations that it has an unholy understanding with the ruling party to collaborate ahead of the 2027 general election,” Ifoh stated. He further called for Adeyanju to retract his statements and apologise for any damage caused to the party’s reputation.
Implications for the Labour Party
The allegations and subsequent denial come at a crucial time for the Labour Party as it seeks to solidify its position as a leading opposition force ahead of the 2027 elections. The party aims to build on its momentum from the 2023 general elections, where it garnered significant support among voters disillusioned with traditional political parties.
As discussions surrounding Nigeria’s political landscape continue to evolve, the LP’s commitment to transparency and accountability will be essential in maintaining public trust and support.
