President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of six soldiers during a recent terrorist attack on a military base in Sabon Gida, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. The attack, which took place on January 4, 2025, was carried out by fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), resulting in significant casualties and damage.
Details of the Attack
The assault occurred at dawn when ISWAP militants launched a surprise attack on the military installation, leading to intense gunfire and chaos. Initial reports indicated that six soldiers were killed, although subsequent updates revealed that the death toll may rise as search operations continue. Military sources confirmed that the attackers set fire to military vehicles and appropriated weapons during the raid.
In response to the attack, the Nigerian military launched retaliatory airstrikes targeting fleeing insurgents, resulting in the reported neutralisation of at least 34 terrorists and the recovery of several arms and ammunition.
President Tinubu’s Response
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, honouring their sacrifice in defending Nigeria. He stated, “Their courage and dedication will forever be remembered.”
Tinubu emphasised the need for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. He called for an inquiry that would uncover any lapses in security protocols and ensure that lessons are learnt to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Support for the Armed Forces
The president commended the Nigerian armed forces for their swift response to the attack, particularly praising the air component for its effectiveness in launching retaliatory strikes against the terrorists. “This resolute action by our military demonstrates their capability and readiness to confront threats to our nation’s security,” he remarked.
Furthermore, Tinubu urged the military to take proactive measures against bandits and terrorists, particularly in the Northwest region where such groups have continued to threaten innocent lives. He expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by military personnel and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting them in their ongoing fight against terrorism.
Broader Context of Insecurity
This latest attack underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Nigeria, particularly in its northeastern regions plagued by insurgency and banditry. Since 2009, conflicts involving Boko Haram and ISWAP have resulted in over 40,000 deaths and displaced millions of people. The government’s response to these threats remains critical as it seeks to restore peace and stability across affected regions.
