In a new development within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), state governors elected under the party’s platform have called on the National Working Committee (NWC) to convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting by the first week of February 2025. This request follows the indefinite postponement of the previously scheduled NEC meeting, originally set for November 28, 2024, due to the funeral of Patience Umo Eno, the late First Lady of Akwa Ibom State.

Context of the Call

The decision to urge the NWC for a timely NEC meeting was made during a two-day meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum held in Jos, Plateau State. The forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, emphasised the necessity for elaborate consultations with critical stakeholders to address pressing issues facing the party. In their communique, they expressed concern over ongoing divisions within the PDP and highlighted the need for unity and cohesion as essential for regaining public trust.

Governor Mohammed stated, “The period between November and February is crucial for addressing existential problems confronting our party,” indicating that this timeframe should be used to implement a deliberate timeline of activities aimed at resolving leadership disputes and ongoing litigation.

Economic Concerns and Political Accountability

The governors also took the opportunity to address Nigeria’s current economic challenges, urging President Bola Tinubu to review his administration’s macroeconomic and fiscal policies. They expressed empathy for Nigerians suffering under what they termed “oppressive economic hardship” resulting from decisions made by the APC-led federal government. The forum pledged that all PDP governors would continue to pursue policies aimed at alleviating these hardships and promoting development.

Additionally, the governors condemned alleged electoral manipulations in recent governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states. They called on the judiciary to protect Nigerian democracy and urged the National Assembly to amend electoral laws to prevent future instances of institutional sabotage.

Implications for PDP Leadership

The call for a February NEC meeting reflects growing urgency among PDP governors to address internal party dynamics as Nigeria approaches another election cycle. The postponement of the NEC meeting had raised concerns about leadership stability within the party, particularly following previous controversies surrounding former National Chairman Iyorcha Ayu’s tenure.

As discussions continue about who will lead the PDP into the 2027 elections, this upcoming NEC meeting will be critical in shaping the party’s strategy and addressing any lingering disputes among its ranks. As preparations unfold for this crucial meeting, all eyes will be on how effectively the party can navigate its internal issues while positioning itself for future electoral success.
