Youths are the largest segment of the nation’s population with almost 60% of Nigerians classified as youths. They are blessed with energy, vision, vigor and a can do attitude.
They are represented in various sectors of our economy. They are in the creatives, tech, banking, manufacturing, agriculture and logistics industries.
This week on Women’s Hub we are rolling out the drums once again to highlight the achievements of youths in national development. We don’t agree with the assertion that they are lazy and without purpose.
Despite societal challenges, don’t you think they are making great strides in these industries:
Agriculture: Have you not noticed the increase in female, young graduate farmers in Ogun, Osun and Oyo states. These ladies are leveraging their education, skills and financial acumen to establish cottage industries around their farms. Such women organise farmers’ markets for their products and even provide house to house delivery.
Creatives: So many women earn their keep from content creation, arts and crafts, fashion design and beauty. Their ingenuity in these industries are unparalleled. They have transformed what was hitherto a fun and untapped vocation into a lucrative business.
Healthcare: Some women have blazed the trail in setting up bespoke family friendly health services. Some are tailored for children, elderly or those house-bound using technology solutions for greater efficiency.
Entertainment: Films, Music industries are replete with talented singers, producers, directors making Nigeria proud all over the world, winning laurels, gongs and awards at glittering world stages.
Aviation: Have you been flown by one of our delectable female commercial pilots? They are professionally trained at the best aviation schools in the world, and they are employed by international and local airlines. One family even has a father and daughter pilots flying seamlessly in the sky. WOW!
Banking/Finance: Young women are making waves in the financial services as managers, directors and founders. At the last count, six women are Managing Directors or Chairpersons of frontline banks. More are Executive Directors and senior Managers.
Politics/Governance: More needs to be done in this still male dominated segment of the nation. Nevertheless, we have had Federal Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Ambassadors, Heads of Parastatals and Agencies. Our leading lights are emplaced at United Nations and World Trade Organizations.
What do you think about the progress of women in national and international development? Do you think the journey has been tough and could have provided more tangible results? Have your say.
