International Women’s Day:

Celebrating Senator Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu

Women’s Hub will be marking International Women’s Day this month by beaming a searchlight on certain women leaders that are making impact in their sphere of influence. We shall highlight the achievements of such local, national and international women.

Our first subject will be Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. She studied Education at the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State. She is a detribalised Nigerian with ancestral roots in Abeokuta, in the South West and Itsekiri, in the South-South of the nation.

She’s not a neophyte in national politics having served in the Senate for over 10 years representing Lagos Central Senatorial district. She was also a First Lady of Lagos state for 8 years during the governorship of her husband.

During her tenure as First Lady of Lagos state, she instituted the Spelling Bee contest to promote literacy and academic excellence among public school students. It was this contest that threw up the popular ‘Governor for a day’ phenomenon which is still being sustained till today by successive administrations.

She was not just a bench warmer as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as she initiated and supported landmark legislations promoting gender inclusion, social development and learning. She was a vocal advocate for women empowerment and political sagacity.

Ever since she assumed the role of Mother of the nation in 2023, she has crisscrossed different states to close falling gaps in healthcare for women and children. She consistently raised private funds from independent influential donors to carry out needed initiatives.

She has donated vital equipment to cottage hospitals in different zones of the country to ameliorate maternal and infant deaths. She facilitated cutting edge training for midwives and other grassroot health care professionals. She moves like a beaver from Kano to Calabar. From Lokoja to Lagos. From Ekiti to Enugu and everywhere in between. I’m

The stylish and cerebral First Lady has been consumed by service and human development from the get go. This is coming on the heels of some First Ladies who merely coasted along wearing fineries and jewellery without getting their hands dirty. Some reportedly spent more time outside the country during their tenure. Others were simply idle or missing in action.

Not so for Senator Oluremi Tinubu who has stood up to be counted as a powerhouse in her own right. As we celebrate International Women’s Day throughout the month of March, Women’s Hub is proud to decorate the First Lady with garlands of honour for her impeccable service to the nation.

We implore you to celebrate International Women’s Day in your little corner by living a life of impact too.
