The Exodus of JAPADIANS: Is Parenting Teens Better in Africa than Western Nations?

A recent social media video featuring Arinze, a Nigerian-American returnee, has sparked interest in the growing trend of families relocating from Western nations to Africa. Arinze, who previously lived in Brooklyn, New York, now resides in a gated community in Lekki, Lagos, and attends an exclusive private school. He confidently asserts that life is better for him in Nigeria.

Another respondent, a female entrepreneur, relocated to Lagos due to mental health issues stemming from racism, sexism, and workplace stress in the US. She has found solace in her new environment.

Chimamanda Adichie, the renowned novelist, reportedly splits her time between Lagos and the US. This is highlighting the appeal of Africa’s cultural and economic opportunities.

Reports indicate that 45 African Americans have settled in Kenya in one month, starting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with their families.

Others such as award winning artistes as Stevie Wonder and Rita Marley have chosen Ghana as their new homes.
Some others have chosen Gambia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Togo, and Benin as their new abode.

We dug deep and found the following:

Reasons for Relocation

  • Racism: Escaping systemic racism and its mental health implications on children
  • Gun violence: Seeking safer environments for their families
  • Family dislocation: Rebuilding family bonds and stability in safe climes
  • Societal fracture: Finding community and social cohesion among people like them
  • Benefits of Relocation:
  • Culture: Immersing in rich African cultural heritage
  • Mental health: Finding peace and reduced stress in calm environment
  • New vista: Exploring new opportunities and experiences with ease
  • Quality of life: Enjoying a better work-life balance and availability of fresh organic food
  • Affordable costs: Taking advantage of lower living costs compared to United States

What do think drives this growing trend?
Is parenting teens indeed better in Africa than Western nations?
