The world holds its breath as the long awaited American Election Day has come. I had an uncle once. Whenever he showed up in the house, he would give a shout: “To be or not to be!” I would reply: “Is to do or die!”
The actual quote is by Prince Hamlet in the eponymous Play, “Hamlet,” by Shakespeare. In Act 3, Scene One, Hamlet is seen on stage in a soliloquy. He is depressed and contemplating death, and suicide. He says aloud to himself: “To be or not to be. That is the question.”
Well, today is a watershed day for the world just as it was for Prince Hamlet. What happens tonight is going to have ramifications for Americans, for immigration, for Middle East palaver, for European relations, for NATO, for Ukraine, for Climate Change, for women’s reproductive rights, and the biggest of all: For Trump’s freedom.
After Trump lost in 2020, but continued to “win” only in his own imagination, he remained center stage. He never went home to rest. He was in a hurry to declare for 2024, and he did long before anyone else, in 2022.
He was on a roll for as long as he was running against “the grand Ol’ man from Rehoboth, Delaware.
Even though the Biden administration had created over 16 million jobs; even though Biden led the country away from a “near recession” economy he inherited from Trump, inflation ravaged the country.
People could not feel the recovery in their pockets—retired people were moving out of retirement back into the workforce to make ends meet. Biden’s candidacy and prospects for the Democratic Party appeared to be doomed.
Save for 1968 when Lyndon B. Johnson declined to run because he had been weighed down and worn out by the Vietnam war despite his remarkable achievements with the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act and the Great Society legislation that helped to lift millions out of poverty, Johnson’s approval rating was dismal.
Such was the fate of Joe Biden, but somehow, his close aides kept telling him he could do it again.
As the world turns, there’s a race no human can run. It is the race against “Mother time.”
The last straw that broke the Camel’s back was the debate. It essentially sank Biden.
From that point on, quiet voices became louder until it became raucous. The Party elite made pilgrimages to Rehoboth one by one until the Iron Lady of the Democratic Party, Speaker Emerita, Nancy Pelosi went to see Biden with a silent but very loud appeal. “The troops,” she said to the Commander in Chief, “are breaking ranks. Sir, what are we gonna do about it?”
Biden may be old, but he gets it. His street smarts from his younger days in Scranton, Pennsylvania, kicked into high gear. He knew the game was up. He called his wife. “Hey babe, we’re gonna have to go on a long vacation.”
The Statesman in him, one which he had nurtured for 48 years since he was elected to the Senate at a tender age of 30 kicked in. He dropped a bombshell that night.
Enters Kamala. Shakespeare wrote: “There’s a tide in the affairs of men/which when taken at the flood, leads on to great fortune.”
The only difference in this case was that Kamala did not have to take anything at any flood—-as on a Silver Platter, Biden graciously gave.
The Trump camp immediately went to war. They had been thrown a hard curve. For a long time, Trump was in total disbelief. He had been on a roll. Now, just like the Taliban fear to die at the hands of a woman, the thing that Trump fears most is about to happen to him tonight. A woman will beat him. The guy is livid with rage. Every nickname he tried to tie to Kamala did not stick. The girl came into her own, straight from the shadows with a swag like we have never seen before in American politics. If you did not believe in God before now, here’s a reason to believe. There’s only one God, “Chukwu Okike.”
He alone makes Kings and removes Kings.
Whereas the whole world thought Hillary was going to be the first girl, just look at Kamala.
She’s beautiful.
She’s smart.
She’s Black/Indian.
She’s got an infectious smile.
She talks it.
She walks it.
She will be a gift to America, and the world on NATO; on Ukraine; on Reproductive Rights; on Climate Change; on Immigration; and finally, I believe she will be a blessing to the Palestinians for a country of their own.
Let’s dream for one minute that Kamala wins, and she sends Oprah as Secretary of State to wrap up the deal in the Middle East. Bingo!!
It ought to be clear to every Arab that Trump will not help the Palestinian cause. He was there for 4 years. He poured petrol on the flames by moving the American Embassy to Jerusalem. To what end?
In a few hours, the world will know which way the world is going to go.
Will we go back to days of airing of grievances or shall we continue in the pathway of respect, and dignity which Biden has set in motion?
