A delegation of prominent Nigerian celebrities, including music icon Tuface Idibia, comedian Basketmouth, lifestyle influencer Ola of Lagos, and Northern musician Rarara, has embarked on a fact-finding mission to India to explore the potential of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Nigeria. This initiative is organised by the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) and aims to provide insights into how India has successfully integrated CNG into various sectors, including transportation and domestic use.
Objectives of the Trip
The primary goal of the trip is to showcase India as one of the world’s largest adopters of CNG, demonstrating its effective implementation across commercial and industrial applications. The delegation will visit key facilities such as conversion centres, refuelling stations, and gas distribution hubs to gain first-hand experience of the CNG value chain.Â
Toyin Subair, Vice Chairman of PCNGI, emphasised that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote transparency and engage Nigerians through influential figures who resonate with diverse audiences. He noted that by using trusted voices, the initiative aims to build public confidence in the transition to CNG and empower citizens with knowledge about this cleaner energy source.
Importance of CNG in Nigeria
Nigeria possesses vast natural gas reserves, making CNG a viable alternative to petrol and diesel. The country has faced challenges related to fuel subsidies and environmental concerns due to its heavy reliance on traditional fossil fuels. Transitioning to CNG is seen as a way to mitigate these issues by providing a cleaner, more cost-effective energy solution.
The Nigerian government has been actively promoting CNG adoption as part of its National Gas Expansion Program (NGEP), which aims to diversify the energy mix and enhance energy security. The PCNGI’s efforts are aligned with this initiative, as they seek to educate the public on the benefits of CNG, including lower emissions and reduced fuel costs.
Engaging with the Public
During their trip, the celebrities will document their experiences and share insights with their followers on social media platforms. This strategy is intended to spark public interest and dialogue around Nigeria’s energy transition. Otega Ogra, Senior Special Assistant (Digital/New Media) to President Bola Tinubu, highlighted that the initiative is not merely about promoting policies but encouraging Nigerians to engage with facts and contribute to shaping the national energy conversation.
