I thought I had done justice to this topic until I started to receive enormous responses that necessitated this final article.
Clearly, marriage is such an emotive issue, and we’re all looking for ways and means to make things better.
So, I will be unpacking the following posers this week: How come multiple wives in wealthy households look serene? Why are they not venting on social media like their monogamous sisters? What are the unknown dynamics of multiple wives in such well-heeled backgrounds?
Let’s put it out that Judaism which gave birth to modern day Christianity didn’t really frown on polygamy. Most of our beloved Patriarchs such as Father Abraham, Jacob, King David, King Solomon, Elkanah, and Esau had multiple wives.
Even the 12 tribes of Israel were products of multiple mothers.
Muslim faithfuls also practice polygamy.
In some parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, polygamy is deep-rooted amongst the upper strata of the society.
You will find a man marrying different women across generations.
There’s the older wife close to his age, then the clusters of younger wives later on.
There’s this case of a much older wealthy industrialist who married a young university student in the 90s.
He already had wives, and children in his household. Everyone naturally thought the union would not last a year because of the vast age difference
Well, the couple celebrated over 20 years of wedded bliss a while back. The man of the house in an interview gushed about his young wife’s brilliance in the boardroom.
I also recollect how 2 top female journalists joined the harem of their polygamous bosses in the 80s. They raised their families and continued working in the family business.
So, the question remains: Is polygamy easier and more palatable when funds and investments are replete?
When Naira,$,£, €, and ¥ are freely available?
What indeed are the unknown dynamics of having multiple wives that monogamous households simply cannot fathom?
From my research findings, some polygamous households don’t live together, while others live together in different apartments but in the same compound.
There was this particularly flamboyant, and wealthy businessman of blessed memory.
Story had it that he lived with 4 of his senior wives in different apartments in the same compound, and he acquired homes for the latter-day wives.
He it was that visited the wives in their respective homes.
Observers believe polygamous homes like these run like scientific machines.
Not every man is called to participate as it commands enormous financial, and emotional capabilities.
Another polygamous arrangement I learned of involved having other junior wives in London, Dubai or Atlanta.
Polygamy is an expensive past time. It is not for the broke or jobless.
So I’m throwing the question back to you as I lay down my pen this week on this topic.
