Court Affirms Abure’s Leadership of Labour Party, Orders INEC to Extend Recognition and Support

On October 8, 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the leadership of the Labour Party (LP) under Julius Abure. The court’s decision mandates INEC to accord the party all rights and privileges associated with a duly registered political party in Nigeria.

Details of the Ruling

Justice Emeka Nwite, presiding over the case, ruled in favour of the Labour Party, affirming the legitimacy of the leadership established during the party’s national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, in March 2024. The court found that the attempts to challenge Abure’s leadership were unfounded and that he had validly assumed his position as chairman.

The court’s order compels INEC to recognise Abure’s leadership and extend all necessary support, including allowing the Labour Party to participate fully in upcoming electoral processes. This includes being eligible for refresher training for party agents ahead of the Ondo State Governorship Election scheduled for November 16, 2024.

Reactions from Labour Party Officials

Following the ruling, Julius Abure expressed gratitude for what he termed a victory for justice and democracy. He emphasised that this decision reaffirms the rule of law and restores faith in Nigeria’s judicial system. In a statement, Abure called for unity within the party and extended an olive branch to those who had opposed his leadership, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

“This victory is not just mine but a victory for justice and democracy. It confirms that our party’s leadership remains legitimate,” Abure stated. He urged all members to reconcile their differences and work towards rebuilding the party’s structure and reconnecting with grassroots supporters.

Opposition from Caretaker Committee

Despite this ruling, tensions remain within the Labour Party. The caretaker committee established by Peter Obi and other prominent party members, including Governor Alex Otti, has resolved to appeal the court’s decision. They argue that their actions were necessary to address internal disputes and ensure broader representation within the party.

Senator Nenadi Usman, head of the caretaker committee, confirmed their intention to challenge the ruling while urging members to remain calm during this transitional phase.

With INEC now mandated to recognize Abure’s leadership, the party faces both an opportunity and a challenge as it prepares for upcoming elections. The call for unity from Abure highlights a critical need for reconciliation within the party as it navigates this complex political landscape in Nigeria.
